_Dejon Weldon grew up in Northern California, and has always loved the arts. She’s been creating pieces as long as she can remember. She followed her passion by studying Studio Art at Shasta College in Redding, CA where she was able to explore multiple disciplines.
One of the most influential events in Dejon’s life was moving overseas to Vicenza Italy in 2004. During the three years Dejon spent in Europe, she continued her education and fueled her passion for art by studying Art History and receiving her Bachelor’s degree. Photography was Dejon’s primary outlet during her time in Europe, but she continued to work in multiple mediums - as she has all her life. Just as Dejon explores many mediums in her art, she intends to keep exploring the world by traveling whenever possible.
Dejon’s art is motivated by: her imagination, the people she meets, places she has experienced, and her undeniable urge to create. She feels working in multiple mediums allows creativity to flow wherever it needs, whenever it wants.
When she returned to Redding California in 2007, Dejon started painting in reverse with acrylics on the back side of plexi glass, a similar process to Verre églomisé (Gilded Glass). Everything is done on the back side of the plexi glass in reverse including her signature, leaving the front of the painting entirely smooth. Each piece is unique and time consuming; the layers must dry completely before the next can be painted on top of it. She feels working on transparent surfaces lends itself to creative freedom and has infinite options.
At the beginning of 2011 Dejon took an opportunity to move to Santa Cruz, California. Since moving to Santa Cruz, she has started using glass as a canvas for her reverse paintings. She’s also started focusing on a Día de los Muertos theme using bright colors and simple lines.
